In 1908 the monumental building that is now Congress Graz was completed after twenty years of planning. It is a prime example of the Neo-Renaissance, while its northern façade features Secessionist elements. Built as a representative headquarters by the local Sparkasse, it also includes the Stefaniensaal, a beautiful concert hall. To this day, Graz’s Musikverein performs most of its concerts here. In 1968, shortly after the building was donated to the city, a concert by the US Air Force ensemble was given here. Protesters responded by dramatically throwing pamphlets critical of the escalating war in Vietnam from the balconies, calling upon the audience to remain vigilant of the political circumstances and undercurrents surrounding seemingly innocuous cultural pleasures.
