A mesmerizing example of Brutalism from the early 1970s is located in Eggenberg—a neighborhood that has a lively independent history. The fourteenth district of Graz was named after the aristocrat family Eggenberger whose castle towers nearby. Eggenberg was a separate town until after the “Anschluss” in 1938. The district was a Social Democratic stronghold and the site of a brutal confrontation with Austrofascist soldiers in 1934. Today the market hall, built in 1972 by architect Gustav Madritsch, and the adjacent park are a focal point in an area foremost associated with the comforts of the nearby spa and the grandeur of the neighboring Baroque palace.
