Connected. Peter Kogler with . . . brings together contemporary art and works from the early 20th century in an expansive montage by Peter Kogler. Known to many through his ceiling design for the main train station in Graz, Kogler has developed a new installation together with composer Franz Pomassl, creating a reproducible, programmed, and mysteriously interconnected cosmos. Joined together with works by Fernand Léger, Charlotte Perriand, Hedy Lamarr, and Friedrich Kiesler—a generation of artists who inspired each other and tried to achieve a synthesis of the arts—Kogler’s works create a spatial experience, a structure bringing everything together. In addition to this immersive work, a focal element of the exhibition is a meditation on the seminal work of the Ballet Mécanique (1923–24), a collaboration between Léger, Dudley Murphy, and George Antheil. It was the first Surrealist-Dadaist film montage shown in combination with mechanical music, and its influence can still felt today. It is being restaged as a machine orchestra, in a new interpretation by Winfried Ritsch. This solo exhibition, which was conceived in close collaboration with Kogler, offers deep insights into his artistic world of ideas that draw from a branching network.
