Machine Divas
Whereas until recently women were considered unable to competently deal with technology and thus also incapable of helping create our brave new world, today many women artists work with internet platforms, interactive VR installations, and robotics. The exhibition Maschine Divas—a term coined by Virginia Eubanks in an interview with Survival Research Laboratories—offers a perspective on the diverse ways that women artists explore the potential of new technologies.
Within the scope of a project for IMA Institute of Media Archeology, Andrea Sodomka and Eva Ursprung worked from 2007 to 2009 on an overview of the positions of women artists who have dealt with “machine theater” in the broadest sense of the term: with the idea of a kinetic, electromagnetic, optical-phonetic theater; theater in real space and cyber space; theater that works with contemporary structures, techniques, and ideas.
