Visitors to Palais Attems are astounded by the disproportionate number of monumental staircases, some of which seem so steep that only the most dedicated alpinists might reach the top. One explanation for this is that the Italo-Austrian Count Ignaz Maria Attems designed the palace himself in 1703, in accordance with his own idea of swaggering representation. During British occupation the building served as the headquarters of the British council. In 1962 it was acquired and restored by the province of Styria and currently hosts the offices of steirischer herbst, Styriarte, and manuskripte magazine, as well as two Catholic student fraternities.
