Historic Hotels in Graz

Graz was a relatively early presence on Europe’s tourist trail, having secured its position on the train line between Vienna and Trieste. A number of its old hotels are situated on the west bank of the Mur river and boast a view of the Schloßberg and the “better” part of town. The most luxurious of these was the Grand Hôtel Wiesler (see separate entry), next to Das Weitzer. Palais-Hotel Erzherzog Johann, which is located near the city’s main square, dates from the 18th century. In the mid-19th century, the building became a hotel that featured an impressive winter garden with a covered courtyard. The Schlossberghotel, which also has an antique feeling, is actually a 1960s guesthouse that was transformed into an incongruous Alpine chalet in the 1980s. Mariahilf on the west side of the Mur is pleasantly old and had in 1857 the honor of hosting the Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter. The Parkhotel across town had another famous but less dearly remembered guest: Adolf Hitler and his entourage stayed here from 3 to 4 April 1938 during their propaganda tour of Austria following the “Anschluss”.
