The former Palais Herberstein, which is now used by the Museum für Geschichte (History Museum) as part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, is located in the old northwestern section of Graz. It was transferred to the Herbersteins from the Eggenberg dynasty in the mid-18th century. Starting in 1754 the ensemble was redesigned by architect Joseph Hueber, who gave the portals their Baroque ornamental framing and devised the grand staircase. Guided by a Rococo handrail, visitors literally climb toward Olympus—a trompe l’oeil painting of the mythological home of the gods graces the ceiling.
