The farmer Franz Gsellmann (1910–1981) spent twenty-three years building the so-called Weltmaschine, a colorful assembly of over two thousand components giving a brief history of humans and combining kitsch elements with technical genius. Gsellmann was deeply inspired by a visit to the monumental Atomium sculpture during the Brussels Expo in 1958. With material found at flea markets, hardware shops, and antique stores he created an apparatus that has no obvious use but generates light and sound effects when activated. It is on display in the private museum at Gsellmann’s old farm in Kaag bei Feldbach in Styria.
