Grazer Kunstverein was founded as a nonprofit, members-based institution in 1986 and has become one of the city’s major venues for contemporary art. It is tucked into the courtyard of the Palais Trauttmansdorff, a complex consisting of two buildings combined in the early 17th century that was severely damaged during World War II and modernized in the 1980s. The Kunstverein’s vaulted spaces date to the 16th century. At different points in the building’s history, it has served as stables, a granary, a brewery, a hotel, and a pizzeria.
