Ariel Efraim Ashbel

Between Dying and Dancing
Artist tour

This year, two artists of steirischer herbst ’19 were invited to enter into an artistic dialogue with selected events of the Parallel Program.

Berlin-based artist Ariel Efraim Ashbel, who was born in Israel, is participating in the present edition of steirischer herbst with the premiere of his newest production, no apocalypse not now. In his guided tour of the exhibition Between Dying and Dancing, he shares some of his research on catastrophe and revelation, offering a subjective view of the exhibited artworks. The tour begins in the park of Schloss Eggenberg, from where the cosmological regularities of the castle’s architecture can clearly be seen. The building reveals the neurotic personality of its creator as much as his fear of apocalypse. Ashbel draws a connection between this place and his research, linking the prince’s phobias to a white man’s disorientation in the face of colonialism, its excesses, and its collapse.
